Approximately more than 400 writers signed their names to an online letter condemning presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump for his “appeals to the basest and most violent elements in society.”
The petition, entitled “An Open Letter to the American People,” poses direct opposition to the election of Trump as president. The letter begins, “As writers, we are particularly aware of the many ways that language can be abused in the name of power,” listing several outlined reasons why the signatories oppose the Republican presidential candidate, who scooped up the total number of delegates for the nomination this morning.
Stephen King, Junot Diaz and Jennifer Egan are among the 400 authors who added their names to the petition. Also amongst the 400 writers supporting this petition include Amy Tan, Cheryl Strayed, Michael Chabon and Lemony Snicket author Daniel Handler. The letter does not include an endorsement of either of the two Democratic candidates, Hilary Clinton and Bernie Sanders.
