A pedestrian bridge at the Florida International University in Miami has collapsed across a busy, major highway Thursday afternoon, with multiple deaths and injuries being reported.

The bridge is brand new, being described as one of its kind, as it was built off site and then installed on Saturday. It was intended to help students get across the highway from one side of the university to the other, and reportedly had not actually been opened for pedestrians yet.

The section which collapsed across the 8-lane highway is estimated to be over 900 tons. Rescue workers currently don’t know how many cars are smashed and how many people are trapped underneath the fallen bridge.

This is a developing story.
