After a hotly contested campaign between Virginia’s Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam (D) and Republican Ed Gillespie, the winner of the race for governor in the State of Virginia has been announced as Ralph Northam, who has won by a 58 percent majority.

Polls closed Tuesday at 7 p.m. EST in Virginia, and both candidates continued to hover around 49 to 50 percent, with the lead switching several times as votes were counted.

President Trump tweeted his support for Gillespie several times, and Gillespie has adopted many of Trump’s policies, especially by taking a strong stand against illegal immigration.

Northam’s campaign took a lot of backlash recently after a pro-immigrant Latino group supporting him came out with a disturbing and controversial video ad, which featured a pickup truck waving a confederate flag driving through the neighborhood while immigrant children ran for their lives.

The ad was pulled following the terror attack in New York City, in which a foreign immigrant mowed down his victims in a rented Home Depot truck.
