President Trump announced Tuesday that he will be withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal, which he has declared all along that it is a “terrible deal.”
Watch President Trump’s full announcement below, as he explained why the Iran nuclear deal is too dangerous to allow it to stand. “The Iranian regime is the leading state sponsor of terror,” Trump said.
Far from protecting the U.S. and allies, “the deal allowed Iran to continue enriching uranium and over time reach the brink of a nuclear breakout,” President Trump stated.
“At the point when the United States had maximum leverage, this disastrous deal gave this regime…many billions of dollars, some of it in actual cash—a great embarrassment to me as a citizen and to all citizens of the United States.”
Trump said he has consulted with allies in Europe and the Middle East on his decision to withdraw from the deal.
“At the heart of the Iran deal was a giant fiction: that a murderous regime desired only a peaceful nuclear energy program.”Today, we have definite proof that this Iranian promise was a lie,” Trump said.
“I will be signing a proclamations to reinstate sanctions against the Iranian regime,” Trump said, vowing that “America will not be held hostage to nuclear blackmail.”
“The United States no longer makes empty threats – when I make promises, I keep them,” Trump said, adding, “We will be instituting the highest level of economic sanction. Any nation that helps Iran in its quest for nuclear weapons could also be strongly sanctioned by the United States.”
“There has been enough suffering, death and destruction. Let it end now,” President Trump concluded.
President Trump has lambasted former Secretary of State John Kerry, who helped craft the Iran deal, for conducting “shadow diplomacy” behind the scenes, in an effort to save the deal.
Trump tweeted Tuesday morning, “The United States does not need John Kerry’s possibly illegal Shadow Diplomacy on the very badly negotiated Iran Deal. He was the one that created this MESS in the first place!”
