One Democratic win from Tuesday night’s election in New Jersey is making headlines, and it isn’t the governor’s race.

Atlantic County Republican Freeholder John Carman lost his seat Tuesday night to Democrat Ashley Bennett, who was inspired to run against him after he posted a meme on social media mocking the Women’s March, which occurred the day after President Trump’s inauguration.

Carman’s Facebook post included the image of a woman in the kitchen, and the caption, “Will the women’s protest be over in time for them to cook dinner?”

“Just asking,” Carman added to the post, which immediately drew backlash from Democrats in his county.

One person commenting on his post wrote, “I will do everything in my power to make sure your sexist behind never gets elected again.”

In an interview following the backlash, Carman stated, “I will support anyone who wants to march. I am a proponent for women’s rights. With that said, some of these marchers, with their vulgarity and replicas of female body parts on your head, they hurt the cause rather than help it. I’m saying ‘Come on, really?’ That’s the part that turns you off.”

Carman had held the seat since 2014, but Tuesday night, Democrat Ashley Bennett, who had never held office before but was angered over the meme slamming the Women’s March, defeated him.

Bennett reportedly works as a psychiatric emergency screen in the crisis department at Cape Regional Hospital. The Atlantic County freeholder board oversees government in Atlantic County, New Jersey, an area of about 275,000 people.
