This left-leaning author is not necessarily a fan of presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump, but she slammed down liberal rhetoric earlier this week by saying those wishing to ban Trump from the country of the United Kingdom cannot kill Trump’s freedom of speech and opinion simply because they don’t agree with what he says. She urges the point across that you cannot silence someone’s freedom to voice their mind when it doesn’t suit your interests or opinions.
The author is J.K. Rowling, the writer of the acclaimed Harry Potter series which were turned into big money churning Hollywood movies. Like some of her liberal celebrity counterparts, Rowling has denounced Trump as “offensive and bigoted” and even compared him to the villain of her book series, Voldemort. However, unlike her counterparts, Rowling believes signing a petition to ban a man who has a conservative opinion as ludicrous.
“Intolerance of alternative viewpoints is spreading to places that make me, a moderate and a liberal, most uncomfortable,” Rowling told a crowd at at the PEN America Literary Gala at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. “Only last year, we saw an online petition to ban Donald Trump from entry to the U.K. If people want to take away the freedom of an opponent just because they’re offended, they have crossed the line to stand alongside tyrants who imprison, torture, and kill on exactly the same justification.”
This may not be exactly the grandest of supports, but Rowling does make an intelligent point about the liberties of freedom of speech. “His freedom to speak protects my freedom to call him a bigot. His freedom guarantees mine,” Rowling concluded.
