Barbara Wozniak, 65, has been charged with second-degree murder for shooting and killing her husband. She has also been charged with tampering with evidence, according to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, after she hid his duct-taped corpse behind a brick wall she built in a downstairs closet.
Sheriff’s deputies received a call about a possible homicide at the house at 86 10th Avenue at around 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Wozniak’s adult children reported to OCSO that their mother had shot her husband, 72-year-old Alfred Wozniak, in self-defense.
According to Wozniak, her husband attempted to choke her on Nov. 10 and she subsequently stashed his dead body in a closet in their home.
The Shalimar resident was served a murder warrant late Friday night at Okaloosa County Jail, where she was already being held on the charge of tampering with evidence.
Investigators obtained a search warrant and found a constructed brick wall inside a closet located under a stairway. After removing the bricks and drywall, a large plastic tarp that had been thoroughly duct taped was uncovered. It contained the body of Alfred Wozniak, who had been shot in the left temple, based on the medical examiner’s autopsy report Friday.
According to the medical examiner’s report, the projectile found near his right temple had traveled from left to right, and back to front, which contradicts Ms. Wozniak’s story relayed to her children.
Surveillance video and debit card statements also confirm that on Nov. 10, Wozniak purchased nearly $130 in supplies from a Fort Walton Beach business. Items purchased included a large tarp, plastic sheet, 20 pounds of repair mortar, Clorox, tape and other supplies, according to the sheriff’s office.
