Former Alabama police officer Faye Gary told MSNBC that in the 1970’s, police heard rumors about the now-GOP senate candidate Roy Moore. Gary says they were warned to watch out for Moore, and to keep him away from high school cheerleaders.
Citing the “rumor mill,” Gary said the word had spread around the department that Moore “liked young girls.”
“We were advised that he was being suspended from the mall because he would hang around the young girls that worked in the stores and, you know, it really got into a place of where they say he was harassing,” Gary told the news outlet on Tuesday.
Several of Moore’s accusers said Moore pursued them at the local Gadsden Mall, including Wendy Miller. She told The Washington Post that when she was 16 and working at Gadsden Mall, Moore asked her out on dates. Miller was flattered at the time. “Now that I’ve gotten older, the idea that a grown man would want to take out a teenager, that’s disgusting to me,” Miller told the Post. Moore would have been in his 30s at the time.
The New Yorker reported that Moore had a “well-known” interest in young women working at the mall. A local Alabama reporter claimed Moore was banned from the mall at one point, “because he repeatedly badgered teen-age girls.”
According to Gary, the mall wasn’t the only place they watched for Moore.
“We were also told to watch him at the ball games, and make sure that he didn’t hang around the cheerleaders,” she claimed.
Ms. Gary did not indicate where these instructions came from, and maintained that they were rumors. She also said that, as a juvenile detective at the time, any official complaints would have gone through her department. She said they never got a complaint.
“Every day we was looking for a complaint to come in and I didn’t realize it until sometime later that when they said he liked young girls, I just thought he liked young ladies … maybe in their 20s,” she said. “I had no idea or we had no idea that we were talking about 14-year-olds. But we never got a complaint on it.”
