MSNBC’s Chris Matthews, known for his nightly hour-long talk show, “Hardball with Chris Matthews,” has been known to make crude comments which he later regretted. A new report from Friday has left him scrambling to apologize again, as he was caught making a snide remark about twice-failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, and joking about drugging her.

According to The Cut, the moment was caught on film (see below) as Mathews was preparing to interview then-candidate for president Clinton on January 5, 2016, ahead of her defeat later that year. Preparing for the interview at an Iowa fire station, camera’s were rolling as Mathews attempted to amuse the crew.

The Cut reports:

Network footage obtained by the Cut shows Matthews, during the interview setup, making a couple of “jokes” about Clinton.

He asks, “Can I have some of the queen’s waters? Precious waters?” And then, as he waits for the water, he adds, “Where’s that Bill Cosby pill I brought with me?”

Matthews then laughs, delighted with the line, for an extended moment, as the staffers around him react with disbelief, clearly uncomfortable.

Mathews reference was to comedian and actor Bill Cosby, who has been accused of multiple instances of sexual misconduct or assault by women, many who say he drugged them, then raped them.

In an apology, Mathews appropriately labeled his comments to have been in “poor taste.”

From The Cut:

“This was a terrible comment I made in poor taste during the height of the Bill Cosby headlines,” Matthews said to the Cut. “I realize that’s no excuse. I deeply regret it and I’m sorry.”

Matthews has a long history of talking disparagingly about Hillary Clinton, whom he once called “witchy,” and often seems to channel what a hypothetical sexist Republican might say about a woman candidate: “she-devil,” “Madame Defarge.”

He once pinched her cheek following an interview, and, though he later apologized, on another occasion suggested that she only got as far as she did on the political stage because her husband had “messed around.”

Mathews has been caught displaying bad behavior in the past. Notably, he made suggestive statements about First Lady Melania Trump on a hot mic (video below). In an article from May, 2016, Variety reports:

During the network’s coverage of Donald Trump’s Indiana primary victory speech, MSNBC’s Chris Matthews was caught on a live microphone commenting on the appearance of Melania Trump, the Republican nominee’s wife.

“Did you see her walk? Runway walk. My God is that good,” Matthews said.

It appeared that the 70-year-old “Hardball” host wasn’t aware his comments were being broadcast. “I could watch that runway show,” he added.

Mathews was also accused by a former MSNBC employee of sexual harassment in 1999, according to a report from The Daily Caller, who said she was given a separation payment by the network of $40,000. MSNBC disputed the claims, saying the money was given as part of a severance package and the amount paid was “significantly less” than $40,000.
