BUFFALO, NY— Buffalo Police have charged a person they say is responsible for smashing a statue outside a Catholic church on the city’s East side.
Kalil Colbert, 18, of Buffalo is charged with Criminal Mischief, Aggravated Harassment, and Hate Crime/ Aggravated Harassment.

Police got a 911 call about 11 P.M. Tuesday night to report the damage at St. John Kanty Church on Broadway. The statue, almost 5′ tall had it’s face and hands smashed. It sat on a marble base in an area known as the ‘Mary Garden’.

WBFO, Buffalo’s NPR news station, provided additional details:
“We learned about it this morning when the staff came in,” said Father Michael Burzynski, parish administrator. “The statue had been knocked of its base and was in the middle of the parking lot with a note.”
That note, in addition to suggesting the church building would be destroyed, stated “Stop worshiping Mary. Worship God. Catholics are a man-made religion,” according to Father Burzynski.
“We have witnesses and film, so we know exactly who it is,” said Father Burzynski. “The store across the street had security cameras.”
