Following the announcement of his firing Tuesday morning, former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson gave one final speech at the State Department.
“I received a call today from the President of the United States a little after noon time from Air Force One, and I’ve also spoken to White House Chief of Staff Kelly, to ensure we have clarity as to the days ahead. What is most important is to ensure an orderly and smooth transition, during the time the country continues to face significant policy and national security challenges,” Tillerson began.
Deputy Secretary Sullivan will take over the leadership the State Department at the end of the day on Tuesday, Tillerson said.
“My commission as Secretary of State will terminate at midnight, March 31st,” he said, adding that he is encouraging the rest of his team to remain at their post.
He commended members of his team, saying they have been “dedicated to our mission.”
“I now return to private life…as a proud American,” Tillerson said.
