President Trump is attacking the Diversity Visa Lottery for immigrants on Wednesday after it was discovered the New York City terror suspect–who drove a Home Depot truck down a crowded Manhattan street, killing eight people and injuring several others on Halloween–entered the United States through the program.
Democrats are still blindly defending the program, however, claiming there are no methods to vet against the type of terror witnessed yesterday, from an immigration standpoint.
Trump tweeted: “We are fighting hard for Merit Based immigration, no more Democrat Lottery Systems. We must get MUCH tougher (and smarter). @foxandfriends.”
However, Democratic ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee Adam Schiff, D-Calif., called Trump’s criticism absurd.
“I think it’s kind of absurd, in the hours after this terrible attack to be using it as a fulcrum for a debate that has been going on in Congress for completely different reasons,” Schiff said on MSNBC.
“There are legitimate reasons to look at how [many immigrants] should be taken … on the basis of diversity, how much on the basis of merit,” he said. “There are lots of considerations there.”
He then made the claim that this type of terror attack just can’t be vetted:
“It’s hard to see, particularly when some of the folks like those who were involved in the Boston bombing came here as young people or as children, or as, really, teenagers. It’s hard to see how you can vet against that,” he said.
“Or people that are second generation. How do you vet for the next generation? Obviously, you can’t.”
