On Tuesday at the Republican National Convention, the NRA-ILA’s Chris Cox explained that this presidential election is essential for the protection of Second Amendment rights. In Cox’s speech he made it clear that Americans need to keep Clinton away from the Supreme Court come November.

Cox said, “We live in dangerous times. We’re worried, and we have reason to be, because our government has failed to keep us safe. You have to be able to protect yourself and your family, and that’s what the Second Amendment is all about.”

He presented a scenario of a mother who is home alone with her baby “when a violent predator kicks the door in.” He said a mother in such a situation will “dial 911 and pray,” but then what? “The police will do their best to get there quickly, but their average response time is 11 minutes.” What happens during those 11 minutes?

Cox said this scenario raises a question: He asked, “Should she be able to defend herself with a firearm in her own home”? Should Americans be able to defend themselves with firearms in their own homes?” He stated these question are “on the ballot in November.”

He explained that in the 2008 District of Columbia v. Heller decision, the Supreme Court ruled that the Second Amendment protects “a fundamental, individual right to protect ourselves and our families with a firearm in our own homes.” However, this ruling was issued when Antonin Scalia was on the court with a 5-4 decision. With Scalia gone, if the court becomes liberal by a Hillary appointment, the Heller decision is up for grabs.

Cox said, “A Hillary Clinton Supreme Court means your right to own a firearm is gone.”

He then talked about the millions of women in America who own guns and the many more thinking about owning one. He said, “It’s not Hillary Clinton who thinks women should have that choice. It’s Donald Trump.”

Cox then stated:

“Donald Trump is a life member of the National Rifle Association. So are his sons Don and Eric because we are the largest and oldest civil rights organization in America. We fight for the rights of all Americans, regardless of race, religion, or sexual orientation, because the right to protect your life is the most precious right you have.

Friends, the five million men and women of the NRA will fight without apology for your right to protect your life. But we’re on the cusp of losing this great American freedom and with it, this great nation. The only way we save it is by electing Donald Trump the next President of the United States.”
